Tests and Learning Objectives

To some extent, a professor’s choice of exam reflects her learning goals for the class. Most professors are familiar with something called the “taxonomy of teaching objectives,” which Benjamin Bloom, a famous educational psychologist, and colleagues created in the 1950s.3 According to Bloom, there are successive levels of student learning, which can be ranked by increasing depths of analytical thought. Educators have since updated Bloom’s taxonomy, to the point that many professors would now describe these levels of learning as such:4
